Fox Thwarts Potter Internet Piracy (but not really)

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

It amazes me how the music and movie industries just don’t get it. This is from techdirt:

Apparently, 20th Century Fox has proudly announced that they successfully stopped bootleggers from taping the latest Harry Potter movie — even though that’s apparently not true. As Dewayne Hendricks points out, he went online and found that you [...]

Google to Dominate the Internet

Sunday, November 20th, 2005

Robert X. Cringely explains how he thinks Google will dominate the Internet in the near future. He thinks that Google will strategically place data centers all around the globe, starting with the U.S. They already bought up a bunch of dark fiber… Once these data centers are in place, they essentially have [...]

Sony DRM is worse than you might think

Thursday, November 3rd, 2005

DO NOT BUY CDs from Sony/BMG or Universal.
Apparently, any CD labeled “Contents Enhanced and Protected” actually contains malicious software (a rootkit) which can cause considerable harm to your computer. How bad is the problem? Over 24,000 CDs have this. Rootkits are typically used by hackers, viruses, spyware, etc. to hide [...]

Opera 9.0 Preview 1 is now available for download

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

Opera has impressed me lately. I’ve been switching back and forth between Opera 8.5 and Firefox. Opera is a lot more streamlined — It takes up less memory than Firefox, and renders pages much faster. As far as standards compliance goes, Opera beats Firefox hands down.

Get Permission to Sing Happy Birthday

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

Ever wonder why restaurants never sing “Happy Birthday” anymore? It’s always some funky variation with clapping involved. Is this to maximize embarrassment? Maybe… it’s more likely that the restaurant owners are afraid of copyright infringement.
Time Warner actually owns the copyright to “Happy Birthday”. If you sing it in a public [...]

String Cheese

Monday, October 17th, 2005

A band called String Cheese actually get it. Instead of sueing consumers, putting DRM on their content which only hurts legitimate consumers, they actually tour! What a novel idea.

Between 1999 and 2003, while much of the music industry struggled with digital piracy and suffered declining sales, String Cheese revenues grew to $14.5 million [...]

Why the U.S. Should Control the Internet

Thursday, October 6th, 2005

via Guardian
Representatives of the EU have coalesced with the mission of stripping the United States of its solitary control on the internet. This comes as a result from the global acceptance of the net as the largest and most widespread economic operating and networking tool of the present and future.
I hope the U.S. retains control [...]

Friday, September 30th, 2005

The University of Michigan has become the only professional school in the country to offer Podcasts of their material to students. In a pilot project with Apple Computers, the U of M School of Dentistry plans to offer certain materials to registered practitioners in continuing dental education courses. Unfortunately, students must use a [...]

Software Will Always Be Insecure

Friday, September 30th, 2005

According to Dr Klaus Brunnstein, president of the International Federation for Information Processing, unless complexity in software design (OSI architectural model) is eliminated, computing will remain insecure in the future. He singled out Microsoft’s Bill Gates. “We must force him to pay for the damage he has caused”, says Klaus.

Why one Mac owner might go back to Windows

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

Russell Beattie, a Yahoo employee has never been known as a cheerleader for Windows. However, he lists 33 complaints about Macs: reason enough, in his mind, to switch to back to Microsoft.
Reason #1:
Anyone who says that Macs are more stable than Windows are smoking dope. I have two brand new Macs and they regularly [...]
