Video Game Spending to Surpass Music Spending

The Video Game industry has already surpassed Hollywood box office sales. It’s now “poised to overtake the music industry in the US”, according to ars technica. Global spending on video games, around $37.5 billion, is expected to surpass music spending as soon as this year. This probably reflects the decline in music sales. You could point to DRM, or piracy, but the real reason for the decline may be a simple matter of household budgets. A typical household only has so many dollars it can spend on entertainment. Instead of purchasing music with all kinda of restrictions, people are spending their entertainment dollar on video games. The video game market is expected to grow to $48.9 billion by 2011, according to Pricewaterhouse Coopers. I’m hoping the music industry will wake up and realize that DRM lowers the value of their product. EMI recently reported that their DRM-free music is selling well. The rest of the industry should take note.
