Upgrade Complete
It all started when my hard drive crashed. Since then, another identical drive crashed! WTF? I’ve determined the cause was the fact the drives are old (7-10 years), they’ve been in a very hot environment (#1 killer for hard drives), and they’ve pretty much been running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I shouldn’t be surprised when they start to fail.
I realized at MPCon that it was time to build a new computer. I’ve had the same hardware for roughly 5 years. I think I had the only beige box there. The hardware wasn’t too out of date for most uses, but it just couldn’t handle the latest games.
Here’s the specs on the new PC:
- Lian-Li PC-V1200Bplus II Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower w/ 3 120mm case fans (nice and quiet)
- Asus 650i Motherboard (P5N-E SLI Socket 775 NVIDIA nForce)
- Antec 650W PSU
- Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache
- BFG nVIDIA 8800GTX
- 2GB DDR2 PC6400
- 2x 300GB SATA HDD (moved from old PC)
- 1x 500GB SATA HDD
- LITE-ON 16x Dual Layer DVD 48x CD burner (to be purchased)
- Dual DELL 18.1″ LCD Monitors (already had these)
The new computer is fast! Without any tweaking, the 3DMark score was 7 times higher than my old machine. I can’t wait for the next MPCon!
