Bo Schembechler

Former University of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler died after being taken to Providence Hospital after a medical emergency Friday morning.

Coaching the Wolverines from 1969 until 1990, Schembechler had an impressive 234-65-8 record. When asked about the big game on Saturday vs. rival Ohio State, Shembechler replied:

I’m as excited as you are about this game, because I love to see Ohio State and Michigan come down to the end. I see this game as being a great classic and I hope the weather’s nice. And I hope the people behave on both sides, because sometimes we get too emotional about this game and we should not do that. And may the best team win.

Schembechler’s Wolverines were 11-9-1 against the Buckeyes. Schembechler played football for Woody Hayes at Miami University, and later became a graduate assistant under Hayes at Ohio State University. Schembechler became Michigan’s 13th head coach after the 1968 season. Against Hayes, his former mentor, the rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State was almost even — Schembechler had a slight edge at 5-4-1.

Current Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr was an assistant coach under Bo Schembechler from 1980 - 1989.
