Lets go Phishing

I typically receive at least 10 PayPal phishing attempts every day! Today was a slow day — only 8 so far. Fake eBay “messages” and “password chnage requests” are pretty common also (3 today). Lately, I’ve been getting a lot from JP Morgan & Chase Bank - 9 today. The newest ones I’ve been receiving attempt to be from Comerica Bank(1), Wells Fargo(1), the IRS (3), Ohio Savings Bank (3), & Visa (2).

For the most part, they’re filtered as spam automatically. If they’re not, I simply add “Dear Chase Bank Customer” to my spam filter.

Basic rule of thumb to live by: Never follow links in an e-mail message. Type in the URL (or follow a bookmark) manually. This alone will make phishing attempts the thing of the past. c|net offers more advice on how to avoid phishing scams

If you know what you’re doing, that’s OK. But what does the average Joe do who doesn’t have time to bone up on the latest technology and it’s downfalls? I feel for those folks, because phising won’t be a thing of the past until they can be savvy enough to avoid scams too.
