5 Terabyte storage on the way

According to a post on digg:

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is working on a 5 terabyte 3.5 inch hard drive aimed at the PC market.

The new drive is slated for 2010 (just 5 years away). With hard drive capacities increasing so much, I anticipate some form of split in the way they’re utilized. Unless manufacturers can keep up with read/write speed, people will use smaller, much faster drives for the OS and applications, while the larger, potentially slower drives are geared more towards storage. Who knows… Maybe these new drives will be much faster than our current 3.5″ disks. I’m definitely ready for more storage. 1TB just isn’t enough these days.
