Google to Dominate the Internet

Robert X. Cringely explains how he thinks Google will dominate the Internet in the near future. He thinks that Google will strategically place data centers all around the globe, starting with the U.S. They already bought up a bunch of dark fiber… Once these data centers are in place, they essentially have their own Internet. Google is reported to already have 64 data centers, up from just 1 two years ago. They’ll be able to deliver any digital content around the world at very low cost. If you want to call up video (IPTV?), you’ll be close to one of their many data centers.

To Google’s local data center, bits are bits and the system is immune to protocols or codecs. For the first time, Internet TV will scale to the same level as broadcast and cable TV, yet still offer something different for every viewer if they want it.

Interesting times… I can’t wait to see what Google does next.
