Congress to legislate file swapping?

This is just ridiculous. A California senator (who I’m sure has had healthy donations from the entertainment industry) has suggested that because file-sharing networks continue to house illegal files, they should be shut down.

From Techdirt:

Her opinion is that she needs to put forth legislation to outlaw these “peer to peers.” Considering what appears to be a weak grasp of what the actual issue is, it seems like any such legislation will be quite problematic.

It’s already illegal to pirate copywrite material. Thanks to the DMCA, I can’t even watch a DVD I own on a portable media player. We don’t need more laws. The entertainment industry should realize by now they need a new business model.
