Google to offer secure WiFi VPN

Wireless hotspots are great. They do have one drawback though in the fact that your web traffic is not encrypted (for the most part). Someone with minimal knowledge can capture all those packets flying through the air, and potentially get your passwords, etc. Google to the rescue! Google has announced they’re going to offer free VPN service! The catch? Instead of anonymous people potentially seeing your data, Google will see your surfing habits.

According to the FAQ, it’s only available in the San Fransisco Bay Area. However, I was able to connect here in the Detroit area. Could this be why they were buying up all that dark fiber?
