Hard Disk Drives from Hitachi Global Storage Technologies

I still find it amazing at how storage capacity has increased over the years. I still remember my first computer that even had a hard drive. It was an “Atari PC” which actually resembled a mac, more than PC. It had a 300MB external hard drive. The thing was huge and had it’s own power supply. Now, fast-forward to 2005. Hitachi is announcing a new way of storing data. By organizing data on the hard disk perpendicularly, they’re able to cram 1000 Gigabytes of data onto one 3.5 inch disk! Amazing! With HD DRVs taking up roughly 10GB per hour of recording to store video, it couldn’t come sooner…

Hitachi has put together a rather funny flash animation that explains how it all works.
